Review Breath of Fire (Wii U eShop / SNES)
Dragon its heels behind the competition
The age of the 16-bit RPG is well-remembered, and many iconic titles from the time are still cherished by fans to this day. From Final Fantasy III to Chrono Trigger, the genre showed genuine growth through some shining examples of emotive storytelling mixed with addictive gameplay. Not one to miss out on all...
About The Game
Long ago, the war between the dragon clans almost destroyed the world. Now, centuries after the Light and Dark Dragons settled their scores, evil is rising again!
Join Ryu, a descendant of the Light Dragons, who has the ability to transform into a powerful beast, in a quest to rescue his sister and stop the Dark Dragons' plans. He is joined by a band of seven companions, each with unique animal powers. Developed by Capcom, Breath of Fire: The Dragon Warrior also features cleverly-hidden character cameos – if you know where to look!

Feels very dated to me. I thought the GBA game was dated but this is even worse. Look at those menus! I'm still playing it though.
I remember playing and beating it with the good ending all the way back in the SNES days... It's definitely outclassed by BoF 2, 3, and 4 (even by Dragon Quarter), but it is still an important part of the series history. This is the game that established all of the hallmarks in the BoF series- especially the metaphysical, religious, and psychological elements.
I bought it at release in North America back in 1994. As a high school nerd who grabbed everything from Squaresoft, the box art was all I had to go on. The game itself is something of a mix between old school Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, but not as polished as either of them. However, it’s still worth playing for the history of it, or if you really like old school grinds. BoF2 is a massive improvement in every aspect of the game.
Am I the only one who feels like the cover art for the game is very misleading?
