Poll: Will There Be A June 2023 Nintendo Direct?

No, there won’t be. It will most likely be the same thing as last year when E3 was canceled. A Direct Mini at the end of June, most likely Partner Direct, and more twitter drops. Wave 5 will be twitter dropped, that’s for sure. Nintendo is attending that event in August, so a direct only two months before makes no sense. September direct will be the next one.

PS: it’s always fun watching social media users and YouTubers breaking down in tears when there’s no June direct, because it’s so forced and over dramatic, like the world will explode if there is no June direct

Hopefully so. I would love to finally get an update about the next Donkey Kong game. It was nearly a decade ago 'Tropical Freeze' came out and there has been rumours for a while a new game is in development. Also new 2D Super Mario Bros game to go with the movie. Now is the perfect time for them to cash in with that.

@TheBigBlue If there IS a Direct on the horizon, I heartily expect it to be a Super Mario Bros. Movie Direct, which tells us the date the Super Mario Bros. Movie will come out, as well as options to get a Digital Download for the Nintendo Switch. I mean, the fact that it would come to Blu-Ray at all would mean we would have memes saying "This is Mario on the PlayStation," or "This is Mario on the XBox!"

If there were going to be don't see why they would've announced the new Joycon colors and 1-2 Switch outside of it.

I don't think so, I assume they'll just announce a game or two via twitter for Fall. I honestly don't expect much more on Switch beside the games and DLCs that are already announced

@mariomaster96 It would be very odd not to make a new Donkey Kong game for Switch before moving to Switch 2 after every other Nintendo console has had one. It is one of their longest running franchises and Donkey Kong was just in the new Super Mario Bros movie and there has been talk of a Donkey Kong animated spinoff movie but they done nothing for Donkey Kong's 40th anniversary and the games seems to have been tossed to the side and forgotten about while every other franchise and its dogs get multiple new sequels on the Switch. I mean Zelda Fans complained about the wait between Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom but that is nothing compared to the wait us Kong fans have had to wait for one new game on Switch.

I'm not giving it much chance personally, not a general Direct anyway. I'm not really in a rush for one anyway as I still have a lot to play, but I wouldn't mind having one!

Nintendo has resented the "obligation" for a direct every June, so if they are directly being pressured anymore by the ubiquity of E3, then they won't do it.

I just really want Genshin to still happen on the switch. And I would love some early teasers for TotK dlc with the first wave being some fun chests with clothing items connected to riddle quests like with BotW. Maybe even some rare schematics like the king of Red Lions as a boat you can only make with zionaite. And I want some pastel pro controllers of course!

With how thin their back half is there has to be a Direct at some point. If one is landing this month I’m sure it’ll be Partner Showcase and save the big stuff for a late 2023/2024 blowout later in the year.

Regardless of Covid, I am fairly sure Nintendo had no direct when there is no E3, as I feel they only did the showcase oit of obligation. Now that E3 is dead, I am not expecting anything until September.

Considering that game-specific directs only happen for E ticket titles (and Xenoblade), it's silly to say we'd get one for Pikmin 4. A more in-depth trailer, perhaps.

I kind of wish there would be one because I'm starting to get that itch for a new Nintendo Direct lol. But hey I've had so little time to play games lately so it isn't the end of the world if there isn't one.

The fact they weren’t attending E3 has zero reflection on whether they’ll have a direct or not. Nobody was attending but are mostly all having their own online showcases.

That said I personally don’t expect a direct!

Of course there will, they will want to show off some Pikmin 4, Second splatoon 3 DLC and announce the Zelda TOTK season pass.

It's not like I need new releases to keep me busy for the remainder of the year. I was barely keeping up with the current 2023 releases and TOTK messed all that up since it's the only thing I play atm.

BUT it would be nice to have a Direct. I have more fun watching those than any of the other gaming shows.

I think it all comes down to wave 5 of the Booster Course Pass of which that seems very likely to be revealed in June. Every general Direct since the initial announcement in February 2022's general Direct has featured the Booster Course Pass (much like Smash's presence for March 2018 - September 2021) so if wave 5 is a standalone trailer then I think the chances of a summer general Direct is 0.

If wave 5 is a standalone trailer I think we'll get Pikmin 4 Direct, Partner Showcase and Indie World alongside some twitter drops for the summer.

Whatever happens for the summer, I think wave 6 would be announced in a general Direct in September.

theres will be a Nintendo Direct in june(be it general, mini, focused on a single game or a partner showcase), because Nintendo confirmed they gonna attend Gamescom 2023, i doubt they will show the Pokemon Scarlet/Violet DLC or the final 2 DLC for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at Gamescom, they will surely reveal some games to show at Gamescom 2023(unless they are atteding Gamescom this year, to show third party finalized devkit for the Nintendo Switch sucessor)

There’s no way to accurately predict what Nintendo will do, but the reasoning given here is pretty strange.

Nintendo in the past 10 years has NEVER lacked a June direct when there was no indication of the major first party games coming out August to December

The notion that Nintendo canceled its E3 appearance means that it had nothing to show at E3 is peculiar as Microsoft and Sony also canceled and they clearly still have something to show

Plus there was Miyamoto’s coy answer regarding future Mario games where he said “we have Directs every two to three months so look forward to those”

Nobody knows what Nintendo will actually do, since they’re strange. But it would be at least a 50 percent chance that we will get some sort of full direct this summer

I don't think there will be a general Direct. We'll see individual game Directs instead. Pikmin 4 will definitely have its own Direct.

The previous one (as well as the latest issues of the other stuff like Indie World and Pokemon Presents IIRC) is far enough behind to freely assume a new pack by default, although whether it's a full course with first party stuff or just "Partner Showcase" (not that the latter's any worse, especially if your library is 95% third party like mine😄) may be a different question.

Honestly, the fact there aren't really any Direct rumors kind of signals there probably won't be one. Even if most of the rumors are bogus, there's just not anyone talking about a summer Direct right now, and usually in the lead-up to one, it gets talked about everywhere

Like most of the community, it doesn't sound realistic to have a Nintendo Direct this summer. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a Nintendo Treehouse for Pikmin 4 though.

They really need to promote that game now and I feel like it's getting lost in the shadow of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

Nintendo will continue to drip feed games on NSO until they are ready for the next Direct which most certainly won't show its face until the earliest of August.

I’m not getting my hopes up. Last year every news source related to Nintendo had me convinced we were getting a June direct. Every YouTuber had me convinced. Leaks were coming out nearly every day about said direct. Turns out we didn’t get a full fledged direct. I’m not getting my hopes up again just to be disappointed.

I think Nintendo with the absence of E3 will showcase what will come for the holidays. The latter half the year is important because like I said holidays are when more shopping is going to happen. Tons of games will be released for preorder and so much more. I believe in honesty that June will have Nintendo Direct.

Nah. Nintendo will be running down the Switch in terms of games now and I have a horrible feeling that the next console will not be backward compatible.
Whilst the Switch is still doing very well, I feel the big N need to be careful to not leave it too long for the next system and not to go away from the Switch model. If they do, I think we will see Wii U style failure again.
I’m hoping for a new console announcement by October this year for release next March. Otherwise by holiday 2024, Nintendo will be start to fall behind.

I'm with you, I barely play Nintendo games on my Nintendo system xD

Trying to guess what Nintendo will do is like trying to understand women, everything points to the fact we aren't getting one but you never know. I could go for another ̶f̶a̶r̶m̶i̶n̶g̶ direct, but I'm perfectly happy if not, my backlog never lets up.

I imagine all Nintendo teams have started projects for the launch of switch 2 .
So if we get any news it will probably be F-Zero remaster and possibly a few other remasters to fill the gap. Maybe a port of Samus returns.
Tho a partner showcase will have a few hitters it also will mostly be flatlining maybe Demon X Machina 2 and a something from Capcom.
Hopefully not a ton of cloud games.

There’s a high chance that we will limp to the finish line with no first party titles now other than pikmin 4 and this stupid trash 1-2 switch part 2.

With the speed Retro studio works at, I also feel that Metroid 4 maybe a launch title for the next console now as well.

I doubt it will be like the transition from the Wii to Wii U, the Wii's sales dropped off a cliff, and Nintendo did very little to promote the Wii U.

The Switch is in a totally different position, six years in and it could still sell between 17-20 million consoles per year, the brand is strong and an updated version will just continue the success, whenever it's announced.

Not a lot of confidence in Nintendo doing a normal summer Direct and I'm in that camp I'm expecting just a Partner Showcase, Pikmin 4 Direct, Pokemon Presents and some Twitter drops until September where the next big Direct will happen

It seems clear that the games in development are for Switch 2, so they can't reveal anything until the console is announced.

I don’t think we get a full blown direct in June unless Nintendo has a absolutely packed fall and winter. After all anything announced at it wouldn’t come out until then ya know? As for my expectations I’m like a mix of Gavin, Alana and Jim I agree with all their points equally even if they oppose. I think it’s semi likely we get a partner showcase as there are some Nintendo exclusive games like Baten Kaitos that could do with a release date and I mean look at last years that’s where we got the Megaman Battle Network Legacy Collection, PAC-MAN World Re-PAC, and Harvestella. I think we’re unlikely to get a regular direct but somewhat likely to get a partner showcase. I think my bolder prediction is there’s not gonna be a Direct in September either. I think Nintendo would more likely reveal a switch successor around then and have it set for launch like the switch 1 in like March or something and be like come check out all our new titles in like January or something.

I’m gonna go against the grain and predict there will be one sometime this summer. Nintendo skipping E3 doesn’t mean much likely a legit direct is cheaper to produce. That’s the real reason E3 died. It’s just much easier. Plus there’s plenty to announce first party including updates on all sorts of dlc. Not to mention Prime 4 and whatever all sorts of developers have been working on. It’s been a while since the in house Mario team has had anything announced plus it’s probably about time Grezzo announces something maybe a 2D Zelda. Combine that with 3rd party content they have plenty to announce if they wanted to. I think there’s still a couple years left in the switch for sure.

Calling E3 time “Gaming Christmas” is kind of a misnomer. We get gifts at Christmas, not just shown what we might get later on.

I think the proper analogy would be the Sears Wishbook, a thick catalog that would be mailed to you months before Christmas, so kids would have enough time to pester their parents for whatever they see in there. And just like E3, what you get on Christmas day is not always what was promised. You may not get all of the things you wished for, and the things you do get may not be as good as advertised.

I was betting on one coming up soon a week or so ago, but then Nintendo twitter casually dropped the Splatoon 3 new season content update, Pikmin 4 previews are showing up in the Switch feed itself, and they even dropped a weird new game no one asked for out of the blue, all things that would've padded out a potential Direct presentation right now.

That Direct will be 99% about upcoming cute indie games.

I am secretly hoping for one but I have no expectations for one. I honestly don't know what surprised they could have up their sleeve besides smaller titles from this point on. No normal Direct, no Switch 2 until late next year and I may even dare say no more than maybe one or two unannounced first party games in 2023. Sorry, but that's my thoughts. They're gonna keep coasting on the Switch's fossilized hardware for another year relying on the two big exclusives they have this year alongside the decade- old evergreens and Wii U ports ...until the next generation arrives. Luckily, Zelda has lifted me up from my deep hole of bitterness because of how century- defining ...ly (Is that even a word?) masterful it is, but the Switch is barely running the thing at points, which is my only massive gripe.

Still, I have wished for something for quite a few years now that has gone from expectation, to disappointment, to desperation, to anger, to downright hatred, to indifference and now just ...nothing. An empty void inside, and it's simply this:

...We really need a new Mario game already. If there isn't new hardware this holiday, a AAA Mario platformer needs to be there ...A 2D one at the very least. I have zero expectations, though. I doubt I'll even watch the September direct live because of my continued bitterness lol

No, won’t be a June Direct. I’ve pretty much given up on trying to understand Nintendo’s marketing strategy. If I was running the company, I would do a big direct (1-1.5 hours) once a year, around E3 time (what used to be E3 time) that took a long view. It would tease and build excitement for games coming out over the next couple of years. It’s purpose would be to build excitement and confidence that this platform has a lot of cool stuff coming down the road so you want to stay engaged, you don’t want to trade it in, you do want to go ahead and buy one if you for some reason you haven’t already. That’s what other companies did at E3 but Nintendo hasn’t done that kind of thing very much in years. Starting in 2020 they seemed quite happy to completely skip June and I’m certain they will do so again this year. I’m not a fan of their recent focus on short term marketing, leaving the middle and long term mostly blank. But it is what is and it seems to be working for them. So yeah, I don’t expect to hear anything until September.

Doubt it. The surprise social media announcement of the 1-2 Switch sequel is a sign we won’t have one anytime soon because that game definitely would’ve been revealed during a Direct. I bet this summer we might get some similar online announcements of maybe more NSO games or Mario Kart DLC, but I don’t think we’ll get a full on direct until the end of summer/start of fall.

I don't see any reason for Nintendo to put out a Direct in June. Right now Nintendo is riding a high from Zelda, so they would be best served by lying low for the summer and doing their big Direct in August or September.

E3 is dead, guys. There's no need to keep June as the month for the big showcases. It can be any time of year now.

I would like to see a Direct but I won’t get my hopes up. I personally feel there should be a few more things scheduled for the rest of the year asides from Pikmin and various dlcs, but TotK is keeping most people occupied right now (like me!) so I can see people not wanting a Direct. Seeing TotK dlc and Side Order news would be great for me. Also, weren’t there a few EPD 4 games announced not in a Direct?

Nintendo usually announces a Direct then it airs the next day, so there's plenty of time this month. They could also just do Twitter announcements and drop trailers on YouTube. As long as content like Mario Kart 8 DLC drops, Splatoon 3 expansion etc. comes, I really don't mind if it's in a Direct or not.

Unless they have a new system announcement or are putting their 100+ 1st party titles they're missing from their NSO services I probably won't even care about the next direct. A lot of the games I've gotten from directs have been ok at best (looking at you Violet) and anymore it feels like you get maybe 2-3 good Nintendo games a year which is the main reason to play the switch. Even so many of the Indie darlings I've tried have started to feel way too similar. Cult of the lamb has been fun at least. Just haven't been wowed by Nintendo in a good while.

I've seen a fair few people dooming and glooming over the potential deconfirmation of a Summer Direct thanks to 1-2 Switch and those new Joy-Cons getting announced (both here and over the past few days) and, while I certainly think it's a bit unlikely, I wouldn't be so quick as to write it off entirely.

We still have zero clue what's coming for the rest of the year Switch-wise after Pikmin 4's release in July in regards to 1st Party releases. I don't doubt stuff like TOTK being able to carry them throughout the rest of the year, but not having anything confirmed for both Autumn AND Winter outside of DLC like Pokemon and Splatoon is insanely suspicious to me.

Overall, while I'm not necessarily expecting a Direct to happen over the next month or so, I wouldn't be surprised if one did get announced given the factors leaning towards it.

I just went on the eshop and saw Pikmin 4 was coming next month. I forgot about that one. So they will probably have a direct just for that game. Unless they are finally going to show the switch 2 that is probably all they will be showing.

I mean, there is literally nothing announced for the last months of the year, they have to show what's coming at some point, right? My guess is either June or July, on time for the release of Pikmin 4, so that it can get a good part of the show. They also have to show more of Fantasy Life i, and perhaps the new Layton?
Sure there won't be nothing outstanding, we already got TotK, but they'll come up with something for sure. Some more Gamecube games remastered, a Donkey Kong game, any other great third party game (Dragon Quest 3 HD?), a price drop. There will be something to keep the good momentum this Christmas, and releasing a Direct in September is not a good idea for that. Too close.

The cancellations of E3 have demonstrated that Nintendo was only there by obligation to set themselves as the "largest" presence at E3. Otherwise, that time is too early for them to be comfortable with revealing some info for their games at a large scale.

We basically never know what's going on with Nintendo, they're so random, they surprise us, they disappoint us...I remember when they said they were skipping E3 and then it was cancelled last year, we all thought a big June Direct would happen, and...nope.

I agree, no Direct for June. Leaving aside a possible one-off for Pikmin 4, I expect the next Direct to be about dlc (Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 3 and probably Tears of the Kingdom - maybe also a surprise for the New Horizons fans?), and maybe some quick wins to fill out what's expected to be the Switch's final year, like the long-rumoured Twilight Princess and Wind Waker, and maybe also F-Zero GX. Any big titles that Nintendo's working on now are likely going to be cross-gen titles rather than Switch exclusives. I can't see us getting to Christmas 2024 without new hardware from Nintendo.

This might be the first time I actually don't care for a Direct. I'm extremely satisfied with the last 18 months in gaming for me, every one of my favorite series came out with a banger of a game (Pokemon Legends Arceus, Kirby and the Forgotten Land + so many other Kirby titles, GBA online, Advanced Wars Reboot, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 + Future Redeemed, and capping off with Zelda TOTK). Plus, I spent a little extra money the past 2 years and picked up Hollow Knight, Cuphead, Chrono Cross, Klonoa, Nier Automata, Doom Eternal, Dragon Quest XI and a few more physical titles to round out my physical collection. I'll probably get Sea of Stars, Hollow Knight Silksong, and Metroid Prime Switch collection/MP4 but I'm just about rounding out all the games I'd ever buy for the Switch (tbh, the Switch might be the last gaming console I ever buy). Pretty sure this backlog and the want to replay older games in my collection will keep me satisfied for the rest of my life. I'll probably still buy the new Xenoblade, Kirby, and Zelda games in the future. Paper Mario is also a hole I need to fill so I'd appreciate a port of TTYD and Super Paper Mario. The only other game I could dream of is a proper Chrono Trigger port for Switch (with the DS content).

It would be very weird for Nintendo to stop having notable holiday games for their still very successful system, so they should probably announce those games. It would be even weirder if they successfully put out a notable release every month this year and then decided to stop during the most lucrative part of the year.

Like unless they're doing their holiday announcements ASAP like in 2020, I can't think of a single year I didn't generally know Nintendo's holiday games by around this time since the GCN/GBA era when I started paying attention to these things.

It'll drop when it drops. I'm so tired of all the speculation. If there's anything we can safely say is that Nintendo does whatever they please to do. So just go outside, touch some grass and be patient.

I don't think you can predict whether there will be a June Direct based on Nintendo dropping out of E3. Everyone dropped out of E3! And then it got cancelled altogether! It seems much more likely to me that Nintendo dropped out of E3 because they knew it was going to suck.

As for whether I think there will be a June Direct: I don't know, and I don't care! But I do think it's funny that June used to be the most predictable month for a Direct, and now it's the least.

So we're all just gonna trust the "leaks" or do we have other evidence that Nintendo skips June? Do we take it for granted that N has no big guns for autumn?

At this point I'm mostly just hoping Wind Waker HD makes it's way to the Switch at some point before they move onto the next console.

I feel like we're going to get a Pikmin 4 Direct and a Partner Showcase. Last year we got a Xenoblade 3 Direct and a Partner Showcase, although last year we weren't really starving for news on upcoming games like we are now. Outside of Pikmin 4, Baten Kaitos I & II HD Remaster, Everybody 1, 2, Switch! (which I almost forgot to list here), and Metroid Prime 4, I'm having trouble thinking of any Nintendo games that have been announced that we're still waiting for. It would be nice if at the very least we got a Direct Mini to announce a few more games and shed some light on upcoming releases.

Where's the "I don't care" option.

The Pikmin 4 trailer today convinced me that it'll be a Partner Showcase.

@Slowdive They've been doing three non-game specific Directs a year since Furukawa took over, a pre-summer Direct, a summer Direct, and a post-summer/September Direct. 2020 was the only exception so far because of COVID. So I think the next general Direct with 1st party games will be in September.

@ToDaisy They're already bolstering Honkai Starrail so I'd be surprised at this point if Genshin comes to Switch.

Are you all kidding? Why is everyone treating Zelda TOTK as the "Nintendo game to end all Nintendo games"? Yes, it's a huge and incredibly full game, but Nintendo is still both a company AND a game developer, always brinking with new ideas, groundbreaking concepts and so many franchises to explore. TLoZ definitely became bigger, but there's also Mario, Metroid, Pikmin, Kirby, Pokémon... alongside many different IPs, genres and concepts who still need that 'contemporary AAA" treatment, which maybe are in development for new, unannounced hardware.
See? That is the reason why Nintendo is holding back big and notorious game announcements.

After a plentiful 2022, I think I know what Nintendo is doing right now, but maybe I don't wanna spoil it in case this theory turns out to be true. Let's simply say, the only way Nintendo would hold a big presentation this month with all the big games they've been making all these years, is if they also announce the Switch's successor. You know, like E3 2012, E3 2006, or the January 2017 Switch presentation, you get it.

As much as I would love that to happen, there is no clear indication it's going to be this month, otherwise there would already be insider rumours and leaks and even small interviews there and there, but the Nintendo frontier is still unfairly silent. I guess I'll have to wait.
It's kinda sad, really. Ten years ago, E3 2013 was both the first E3 I lived in full coverage, and the first one where (a much more troubled, even!) Nintendo held a digital presentation instead of a press conference... Hard to think 10 years later they would be on an mysteriously transitional position, while they allow only Microsoft and Bethesda hold their showcase on that exact same date.

Curious to know why it matters if there is one or not and why some people get so angry when there isn’t (or when a particular game doesn’t get announced when there is one).
